July Performance By Day

July SPY performance by trading day – first 10 days (1-10) and last 10 days (11-20):

July IWM performance:

SPY is a bit flattish, but IWM, which spans 2000+, seems a bit bearish, although there is some recovery right before options expiration (around trading day 13 above). It seems this month is a bit more volatile that some of the other months.

I looked at what trading day the closing low of the month occurred. For SPY, over the past 19  years, the low has been in the first 5 trading days 6 times, last 5 trading days 6 times. For IWM, over the past 12 years, the low has been the first 5 trading days 4 times and last 5 trading days 4 times. Conversely, the high for the month for SPY has been in the last 5 days 9 times, first 5 days 6 times. For IWM the high has been in the first 5 trading days 5 times and 3 times in the last 5 days.

July 2002 was a nasty month, at one point SPY and IWM were down around 20% from June’s closing.
